A Gentle Approach to Supporting the Nervous System and Body

A Gentle Approach to Supporting the Nervous System and Body

Sometimes our bodies hold onto stress, tension, or protective patterns long after the original cause has passed.

You may notice it as a tight jaw, headaches, neck and shoulder tension, difficulty relaxing, feeling constantly “on,” or simply a sense that your body never fully settles.

Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle hands-on approach that works with the nervous system, fascia, and connective tissues throughout the body. Rather than forcing change, it encourages the body to shift out of patterns of tension and protection at its own pace.

As a Registered Massage Therapist, I often incorporate CranioSacral Therapy into treatment when a gentler approach may be more supportive than deeper pressure alone.

When Might CranioSacral Therapy Be Helpful?

Many people seek Craniosacral Therapy when they are experiencing:

  • Chronic stress and burnout
  • Headaches or migraines
  • Jaw tension or TMJ discomfort
  • Neck and shoulder tension
  • Persistent pain patterns
  • Difficulty relaxing
  • Post-concussion symptoms
  • Feelings of overwhelm or nervous system overload
  • Tension that keeps returning despite treatment

You don’t need to have a specific diagnosis to benefit from treatment. Often people simply know that their body feels tense, exhausted, or stuck in a pattern they can’t seem to get out of.

Why Use Such Gentle Pressure?

One of the most common questions I hear is:

“How can something so gentle make a difference?”

Deep tissue massage and Craniosacral Therapy affect the body differently.

There are times when deeper pressure is exactly what a body needs. There are also times when the nervous system is already working hard to protect, compensate, or manage stress. In those situations, more force isn’t always the answer.

Gentle fascial and craniosacral techniques work with the body’s connective tissues and nervous system rather than through pressure alone. By slowing down and listening to the body’s responses, treatment may help reduce protective tension patterns, improve mobility, and create an opportunity for the nervous system to settle.

Neither approach is better than the other. They simply serve different purposes.

Part of my role is determining what approach may be most helpful for you on any given day.

What Does A Session Feel Like?

Every session is unique.

Some treatments include massage therapy, movement, or deeper therapeutic work. Others may involve gentler techniques and longer periods of stillness.

Many people describe feeling deeply relaxed during treatment. Others notice easier breathing, less tension, greater comfort in their body, or a sense of calm they haven’t experienced in quite some time.

There is no expectation that you feel or experience anything specific. The focus is simply on supporting your body in the way it needs that day.

My Approach

No two bodies need the exact same treatment.

Some sessions may involve deeper therapeutic massage to address muscular tension, restricted movement, and chronic pain patterns. Others may focus on calming the nervous system through gentler hands-on techniques that help reduce stress-related guarding and overload.

I don’t believe effective treatment is about always working deeper or always working gently.

It’s about listening.

Listening to what your body is telling us, how it is responding, and choosing an approach that supports healing rather than forcing change.

Every treatment is individualized based on your symptoms, comfort level, goals, and how your body responds during the session.

A Gentle Invitation

If you’re curious about Craniosacral Therapy, you’re welcome to ask questions during your appointment. Sometimes it’s incorporated into a massage therapy treatment, and sometimes it becomes the primary focus of the session.

Together, we’ll determine what approach feels most appropriate for you and what your body may be needing that day.
